What is Google Search Console?

Google Search Console, previously known as Google Webmaster Tools, is a tool that helps you monitor and improve your website's presence in Google Search results. This tool, offered for free by Google, is essential for website owners, SEO experts, and digital marketers. It's like having a health checkup tool for your site, helping you monitor, maintain, and troubleshoot how your site shows up in Google search results.

Why You Need Google Search Console

Imagine driving a car without a dashboard. No speedometer, no fuel gauge, nothing. That's what managing a website without Google Search Console is like. It provides vital information like search queries leading to your site and average click-through rate, and it even alerts you about security issues or manual actions required. In short, it's a necessary step to understand and improve your website's performance.

Here are just some of the things you can do with the platform:

  • Request indexing on pages and posts

  • Check indexing status

  • Research keywords

  • Discover and check crawling errors

  • Optimize website visibility

  • Monitor performance

  • Get alerts when there is a site issue

  • See backlinks

  • Search analytics reports

  • Submit a sitemap

And that's not even all of the uses of Google Search Console.

Who Should Have Google Search Console Access

In short, anyone who has a website should sign up for Google Search Console. It's a no-brainer to monitor your site.

As far as who should have access once your account is up and running? Well, not just anyone should have access to your Google Search Console account. It's like handing over the keys to your digital kingdom.

The main person should be the website owner, of course. But beyond that, your SEO team, certain team members, or a delegated owner might also need access, especially if they're working on search engine optimization for your site.

Now that we know the basics let's get into how to actually add a new search console user to your account.

How To Get Google Search Console

First things first before we jump in. Do you already have a Google Search Console account? If not, here is what you need to do:

Head over to Google Search Console.

Next, select your property type. I suggest selecting URL prefix, especially if you are a beginner. Add your website and hit continue.

You'll then want to copy the HTML tag that pops up.

From there, I recommend adding the plugin called WPcode (previously Headers and Footers), if you are using Wordpress. Once the plugin is installed and active, go to Code Snippets and click on "Add New Snippet".

Now, all you have to do is select Add Your Custom Code, and add in the HTML tag in the Code Preview Section. Once done, go back to the Google Search Console page and hit Verify!

How to Add a User to Google Search Console

Adding a user to your Google Search Console property is honestly a pretty straightforward process. Still, it's crucial to do it correctly. Let's break it down step-by-step.

Step 1: Access the Right Property

First things first, make sure you're on the correct property in your Google Search Console account. You don't want to accidentally grant someone access to the wrong website property.

Step 2: Navigate to the Right Menu

Once you're in the correct property, look for the settings menu, typically found in the bottom left-hand corner. From there, select 'Users and permissions.' This will take you to the user management area, where you can see who currently has access and what level of permissions they have.

Step 4: Set Permissions

Google Search Console offers different permission levels - from restricted users, who can view most data but not take actions, to full user permissions, who can view all data and take some actions. Choose the level of access that fits the role of the new user.

Step 5: Send Invitation

After setting the permissions, hit the add button. The new user will receive an email notification inviting them to join the Google Search Console property. They must accept the invitation to gain access.

How to Remove Access and Other Considerations

  • Removing Access: Just as important as adding users is knowing how to remove access. It's a simple process: go back to the user management screen, find the user, and select Remove access.

  • Types of Owners: There are different types of owners in Google Search Console. A verified owner has complete access and can add or remove other users, whereas a non-verified owner has limited capabilities.

  • Verification Method: Ensure you have the correct verification method set up for your site, like an HTML file upload or an HTML tag, to maintain ownership of the property.
