Are Blogs Oversaturated?

According to a 2023 study done by HubSpot, out of 1.9 billion websites in the world, more than 600 million of them are blogs. Their authors account for over 6 million blog posts daily. Sounds oversaturated, right? Wrong.

Let me explain

While, yes, the blogging market is saturated, there are still unsaturated niches out there that you can tap into.

It's all about medium to low-competition niches. That's the sweet spot to getting your blog seen among the millions. Some niches are very competitive and nearly impossible to break into; don't focus on those. There are plenty of other niches you can do to rise to the top.

Blogging Realities and Expectations: How long does it take to make $ 1,000 a month blogging

According to Bloomberg, statistics say that 80% of new blogs fail within 18 months of launch. That's a pretty staggering statistic if you ask me.

If you're a new blogger, don't lump yourself into that statistic just yet. The reason so many blogs fail is that a blogger may lack focus and content, lose patience, or simply not understand how to grow a blog. It takes time, hard work, and consistency

It's important to address that while blogging can definitely be profitable, it's not a get-rich-quick scheme. Which is why a lot of people give up.

With that said, if you are consistent, how long does it take to make $ 1,000 a month blogging?

The answer is layered, encompassing factors like niche selection, content quality, consistency, and strategic monetization. You'll need to focus on creating high-quality content, monetizing when you can, and promoting your blog consistently.

While attaining $1,000/mo is possible with the right growth strategies in place and executed, it isn't the norm. Realistically, it typically takes bloggers an average of 1 to 2 years. So aim for 6 months, but know it can take longer.

Are Blogs Still Profitable Through Current Monetization Strategies?

You want to know if blogs are still profitable in 2023. So, here is how to make that profit. There are going to be four main ways to monetize your blog: SEO, affiliate marketing, ads, and partnerships (brand deals).

Are Blogs Still Profitable through SEO (Search Engine Optimization)

SEO isn't just a buzzword; it's the cornerstone of organic traffic that could convert into monetary gains. A well-optimized blog is what's going to get Google to not only find you but also rank you. When your blog ranks high for specific keywords, it becomes a hot property for advertisers and a magnet for readers interested in your content and product recommendations.

There is a lot that goes into SEO, and I strongly recommend taking a course from a trusted expert to help you write your blogs effectively. I took several, but it was the "60 SEO Solution" course that really catapulted my blogs. I'll share more about it further down!

Are Blogs Still Profitable through Affiliate Marketing

Affiliate marketing provides a way to earn commissions by promoting other people's (or company's) products. Your blog becomes a platform to recommend products or services, earning a slice of profit for every sale made through your referral.

  • Choose Relevant Products: Opt for affiliate products that resonate with your content and are relevant to your audience.

  • Transparent Recommendations: Be honest and transparent about your affiliations, building trust with your readers.

  • Optimize Affiliate Content: Utilize SEO to drive traffic to your affiliate content, increasing the chances of conversion.

Are Blogs Still Profitable through Ads

Monetizing through ads involves displaying third-party advertisements on your blog earning revenue through various payment structures such as Pay-Per-Click (PPC) or Cost Per Mille (CPM).

  • Ad Networks: Leverage popular ad networks like Google AdSense to automate ad placements. You can get started with AdSense (PPC), but once your blog grows to 50,000 sessions per month, you can apply for Mediavia, which is CPM. Essentially, you'll make a lot more money with Mediavine.

Are Blogs Still Profitable through Partnerships

Collaborating with brands and businesses can be mutually beneficial. You can create sponsored content, host giveaways, or engage in various campaigns that align with your blog's niche.

  • Pitch to Brands: Reach out to brands that align with your blog's theme and propose collaboration ideas.

  • Sponsored Content: Create content sponsored by brands, ensuring it provides value to your audience while meeting partnership objectives.

  • Ambassadorships: Establish long-term relationships with brands as an ambassador, promoting their products or services through your content.

These monetization strategies can significantly boost your blogging income when implemented effectively. Remember, always align monetization efforts with your niche and audience preferences to maintain authenticity and engage your readers genuinely.

How to Gain Visibility for Your Blog

Aside from the strategies above, I'm sure you're wondering how to gain visibility quickly. Luckily, there are so many options nowadays that you can pick and choose platforms that work best for you and your goals. Below are the four proven ways to get more eyes on your blog.

  • Pinterest: Leveraging Pinterest's platform is one of the most crucial and smartest ways to drive traffic to your blog. It's not only a social media platform but is essentially a search engine. If one of your pins ranks high, you can generate traffic from that pin for years to come.

  • Email Lists: Next to Pinterest, this is the most important. An email list allows you to converse directly with your audience. Through relevant newsletters and personalized content, you can maintain engagement, guide people to your latest posts, share affiliate links, and connect on a more personal level with your audience.

  • TikTok: We all know TikTok is huge right now, and when someone goes viral, it can be life-changing. A strategic use of trending hashtags and audio can catapult your content into wider visibility, directing users back to your blog.

  • Instagram: Instagram is fantastic for brand partnerships. You can weave visually captivating stories using your feed, Reels, and stories to establish a connection with your audience.

Utilize each platform's unique features to communicate your blog's essence and lead users to dive deeper into your content. And remember that consistency, engagement, and authenticity are key to boosting your blog's presence across the digital realm.

Blog Niches to Avoid

New bloggers should tread carefully across certain niches, especially considering the competition and challenges some blog types might present.

New bloggers should avoid blogs that are:

Saturated Niches or Overly Competitive:

Why: Overly saturated niches, like personal finance or weight loss, can be tough for new bloggers due to high competition and established authority figures.

Broad Lifestyle Blogs:

Why: Without a specific focus, lifestyle blogs can struggle to attract a dedicated audience and may find it challenging to stand out amidst the numerous existing blogs. Niche down and find your personal angle.

Medical and Health Advice Blogs:

Why: Legal and ethical responsibilities, along with the need for accurate, reliable information, make medical blogging a tricky and sensitive field.

Legal Advice Blogs:

Why: Similar to medical blogs, providing legal advice can come with hefty responsibilities and potential liabilities, demanding utmost accuracy and credibility.

Other common mistakes for new bloggers include:

  • Not defining a target audience

  • Blogging inconsistently

  • Deviating from the target niche

  • Publishing short content frequently

  • Targeting overly competitive keywords
