Canva is this amazing tool that's perfect for, well, basically anyone—even if you can't tell a pixel from a Picasso. It's all about making design super easy and fun, too! So whether you're running a small online shop or just someone who enjoys playing around with visuals, Canva's got your back.

I totally get it; diving into something new can feel like a big ol' maze. But that's exactly why Canva training for beginners is a thing. It's user-friendly and great for both design rookies and pros.

Whether you're a small business owner looking to make your social media posts pop, a teacher eager to make learning materials that'll keep kids awake, or just someone who enjoys tinkering with the design, Canva is your new BFF. Once you get the hang of how to use Canva, you'll wonder how you ever lived without it. Ready to make some magic? Let's do this!

So, let's get right into my Beginners Guide to Canva

First, let us discuss the memberships you can sign up for.

There are four different options when signing up for a Canva account. They include the free version, Pro, Enterprise, Canva for Education, and Canva for Nonprofits. You will likely choose between the Free and Pro versions of Canva, as those are the two most popular and the two we will focus on.

1. Canva Free: This is the basic level of Canva, and it's absolutely free to use. You'll get access to over 8,000 free templates, hundreds of thousands of free photos and graphics, and the ability to invite members to your team. You can also upload and store your own images. It's a powerful tool even at the free level. This is a good place to start. I would take some time dabbling with the free version, and once you get the hang of it, upgrade to Pro.

2. Canva Pro: Canva Pro is a subscription service with a monthly or yearly fee. With Canva Pro, you get everything in the free version, plus a lot more.

This membership will run you approximately $119.40 yearly or $12.95 monthly. The annual membership will save you $36, so if you plan to get serious about graphic designs, go with annual. It's absolutely worth every penny, as the the design possibilities are endless. The features make it well worth it. Here is a list I found on Canva just to prove how valuable a Pro membership is:

  • Access to over 420,000 free templates includes exclusive access to a significantly larger range of editable template designs. I love starting out with a template and making it my own. It's so nice to start with a base of sorts to help bring my idea to life.

  • Over 75 million premium stock images, videos, and graphics: Canva Pro provides access to a vast library of premium visuals and elements. There is something for everything when it comes to Canva's photo selection. You can also edit and adjust the photos as needed, including erase backgrounds.

  • Brand Kit: You can save your brand's specific colors, logos, and fonts for easy access and consistent branding across all your designs. I love using this for each of my clients. It keeps me organized and allows the designing process to stay on brand.

  • Magic Resize: You can instantly resize any design to fit different platforms or formats, saving time and effort.

  • Upload Your Own Fonts and Logos: Canva Pro allows you to upload your own fonts and logos, providing more customization options. I buy a lot of fonts from Creative Fabrica and Creative Market

  • Save designs as templates: You can save them as templates, allowing you to easily reuse them.

  • Unlimited Folders: Canva Pro allows you to create as many folders as you need to keep your designs and assets organized.

  • Save Designs with Transparent Background: With Canva Pro, you can download your designs with a transparent background, a crucial feature for creating certain types of designs like logos.

  • Animation: Canva Pro lets you animate your designs, turning them into short, eye-catching videos.

  • Schedule social media content: Canva Pro integrates with several social media platforms, allowing you to schedule posts directly from Canva.

  • 100GB Storage for Uploads: Canva Pro offers significantly more storage space for your uploaded images and assets than the free version.

  • Priority Support: Canva Pro users get faster customer support responses.

  • Cost-Effective: With a free version that's quite comprehensive, Canva offers a cost-effective solution for businesses on a tight budget. Even the paid versions offer great value for the price.

Cons of Canva:.

  • Limited Advanced Design Features: Canva might not meet the needs of more advanced designers who are used to more sophisticated tools like Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator.

  • Limited Free Version: While the free version of Canva offers a lot, certain assets and features like resizing a design, transparent backgrounds, and most premium templates are only available in the Pro version.

  • Internet Dependent: Since Canva is a web-based tool, you need an internet connection. This can be inconvenient in a location with poor or no internet access.

  • Ownership of Images: Canva's licensing agreement states that you can't acquire the ownership or exclusive rights to any elements from Canva, even the ones you pay for.

  • Image Quality: Some users have reported that the image quality can be lower than expected, particularly when printing designs.

Please remember that the choice of a design tool should be based on your specific needs. Canva is a fantastic tool for many users, but like all tools, it may not be the perfect fit for everyone.

Honestly, the cons aren't even that bad. Just make sure you upload high-quality photos, read the licensing agreements, and get yourself Pro, and you will be all set.

All you need to do is make sure you have the "Design" tab selected, and you can scroll through 100s of options. You can narrow down selections, as well. As you can see, I typed in "how to guide".

Now, let's get you signed up and going!

1. Sign Up: Head over to Canva's website, Click the "Sign Up" button to see options for using your Google, Facebook, or Apple account. Alternatively, you can sign up with your email address. You'll want to remember whichever method you choose because that's what you'll use to log in each time.

2. Onboarding: Canva will guide you through a quick onboarding process after signing up. It's designed to understand your needs and provide a more personalized experience. They'll ask you questions about what you plan to use Canva for, like education, personal use, or small business.

3. Dashboard Navigation: Once you've finished onboarding, you'll find yourself on your new Canva dashboard. You'll see a navigation panel on the left side. This is where you can access designs, templates, and other features. The dashboard might seem a little overwhelming at first but don't worry. Spend some time exploring, and you'll soon find your way around.

4. Start a New Design: When you're ready to start designing, click the "Create a design" button on your dashboard's left. A dropdown list will show you different design options – from social media posts to presentations. If you know the design dimensions you want to create, you can use the 'custom dimensions' option.

5. Choosing a Template: After selecting the type of design, you'll be taken to a new page with your blank template. On the left side, you'll find an array of ready-made templates. When you find a template that catches your eye, click on it, and it will appear in your template space.

6. Customizing Your Design: Click on the part you wish to change to start customizing your design. For text, click on it and start typing your message. If you want to change colors, click on the element you want to change and select a new color from the top menu. Remember, you can always undo your actions by using the undo arrow on the top right.

7. Uploading Images: If you want to add your own images, go to the left sidebar and click "Uploads." Then click on the "Upload an image or video" button. Once your image has been uploaded, you can drag it into your design. You can also adjust the size, crop, or apply filters as you see fit.

8. Adding Elements: Canva also provides a library of elements – like shapes, lines, frames, or even charts. Just go to the "Elements" tab on the left sidebar. Once you find what you need, drag it to your design. You can also search for specific elements using the search bar at the top. Here is an example. I created a graphic to promote this very article you are reading right now. I want to add an arrow. So, I can select "Elements", type "arrow" in the search bar, and select from there.

In this instance, I wanted an animated arrow. To get only animated, you will want to go to the three horizontal lines in the far right corner of the search bar, and scroll to selected "Animated". You will also see lots of other selections you can make.

9. Save and Download: After designing and being happy with your creation, click the "Download" button at the top right corner. You can download your design in various formats, including JPG, PNG, PDF, MP4, SVG and GIF.

10. Sharing: Canva also allows you to share your designs directly from the platform. Click on the "Share" button at the top right, and you'll find options to share your design via email, a direct link, or even to your social media pages. This is where you can save as a template, share a view-only link, and many more options.
